He will also make history as the first secretary openly declared to be gay.
Buttigigeg, 38, is a veteran of the American Navy, who served as an intelligence reserve officer in Afghanistan in 2014.
His appointment for the Secretary of Transport was praised by gay rights groups.
The Human Rights Campaign said Buttigig “has been open and honest to” for its identity and has given voice to the community.
Buttigigig has been competing for the Democratic Party's nomination as candidate for the 3 November presidential elections.
After falling out of the race, he supported Beden.
