The store is known as a thermopole, and was discovered in Regio V Archaeological Park, which is not yet open to the public. The location was introduced yesterday.
Nearly 2,000-year-old food tracks were found in several deep jars. The front of the counter was decorated with bright - colored frescoes, some describing animals that were part of food ingredients, such as chicken and ducks.
This is an extraordinary discovery. This is the first time we've been digging a whole thermopole,” said Massimo Ossana, director of Pompeii Archaeological Park, CNN reports.
Archaeologists also found a bowl decorated with bronze drinks, pottery vessels.
Pompeii, 23 km southeast of Naples, was home to some 13,000 people when they were buried under ash.
Our preliminary analysis shows that the figures drawn on the front of the counter represent, at least in part, food and drink sold,” said Valerie Amortti, an anthropologist.
The amortti said that traces of pork, fish, snails and calves were found in the container, a discovery she called “a testimony to the great variety of animal products used to prepare meals”.
A rare documentation of Greco-Roman life, Pompeii is one of the best-known Italian attractions and a world heritage of U NESTO.
