The leading Slovenian epidemiologist Mario Fafangel left a working group of the Ministry of Health today, which is advising the government of measures to fight COVID-19, the National Public Health Institute (NIJZ) has announced.
The head of the NIJZ Centre for Infectious Diseases, informed Health Minister Tomash Gantar of his decision and explained his reasons, but he has no intention of providing a public explanation, reports Slovenian STA.
Fafangel recently told the political weekly Miladina that he disagreed with some of the restrictions imposed by the government, but stressed that strict measures were usually needed to fight the epidemic.
There are four NIJZ members in the group, and for now it is unknown who will replace Fafangel.
Minister Gantar, meanwhile, announced the possibility of restructuring the task force for COVID-19 and reducing its number, stressing that they often exchanged very different opinions.
The fact is that he probably disagreed with the methods and ideas of several individuals in the group many times. If you can't go one step further, you'll probably make another decision,” said Gantar.
Commenting on Fafangel's resignation in a press release, Gantar said he would invite him to join this reformed working group while praising his work.
I understand his ill will and must say I agree many times with him,” The minister added.
