“Around 40 police officers were injured in clashes with business owners and activists in Independence Square”, Ukrainian police said, the BBC reported.
She said the officers suffered chemical burns in the eye as some of the crowds also used tear gas.
The injuries were also reported among protesters, who had tried to place tents to camp overnight.
Protesters are angry about a recent move by Ukrainian authorities to impose additional block restrictions and taxes on owners of small businesses.
Between 8-24 January, all non-toxic businesses will be closed across the country.
Ukraine has reported more than 900,000 confirmed infections since the beginning of the explosion, with over 15,000 deaths.
