According to survivors, the ship has been carrying 40 or 50 persons heading towards Italy, an official has said.
The coastal area near the Sfax port in Tunisia has returned to the point of starting people who flee the conflict and poverty of countries in Africa and the Middle East in search of a better life in Europe.
At least 12,000 migrants have gone by ship from Tunisia to Italy this year, according to the nongovernmental organisation, the Tunisiaan Forum for Economics and Social Rights.
