Many historians view it as one of the most influential presidents of the past 20th century. Woodrow Wilson, as he was commonly known, was a law graduate and had a doctorate for political science. He had been a Rector of Princeton University, New Jersey, and was elected governor of this state in 1910.
In 1912, he was elected president of the United States. Woodrow Wilson fought for reforms, he sought the protection of workers, strengthening the banking system and limiting the power of large corporations.
He tried to end the first world war, which had erupted in 1914, and kept the United States out of this war. In 1917 he hesitated to put America into war. This helped the Allies to achieve victory in 1918. A year later, he was hit hard by the hemisphere, which some say was caused by the opposition faced by many of his peace proposals.
He spent the last two years of his career as president as an invalid and, according to some historians, government affairs were almost directed by his wife, Edith. Woodrow Wilson died in 1924, three years after leaving office.
