Former head of O verifiator mission The SBE in Kosovo, William Walker, has said former KLA leaders are being unjustly investigated in The Hague, as the purpose of their war was to free the country.
According to him, the terrorist term cannot be used to describe The KLA, but Serbian army and paramilitaries like Arkan.
“U n CK is what her name says. The KLA was a group of young people mainly who stopped enduring the oppression and war crimes that were being committed by the Belgrade government. They took up arms to defend themselves, villages and protect their families, and the result was I prayed for”, Walker said for Euronews.al.
I think it's a strange use of the terrorist word, to describe KLA. I would use the terrorist word for the Serbian Army, police, paramilitaries, guys like Arkan and his militia groups that committed really terrible acts in Kosovo”.
Walker, who witnessed the Recak massacre, who would later change Kosovo's history, said Kosovo and Serbia have not been treated equally, as the losing party, Serbia, is not being asked responsibility for the atrocities it committed in Kosovo.
The special prosecutor's <x0) office claims that war crimes, atrocities committed by the KLA. And now they're trying to investigate some people who identified them as guilty... we're talking about five fighters who have gone to The Hague, including President Thaci and former Parliament Speaker Kadri Veselin”.
“One of them was field commander Jakup Krasnqi, whom I met several times during the war. He wasn't a warrior in my judgment, was a spokesman for KLA and Thaci were not a fighter, was a political leader of the organisation”
And to hear that in 7 hours there were raids on their homes, and more at Krasniqi's house I see the whole strange process”.
According to Mr. Walker, Serbian President Vucic, who has been Milosevic's minister, has not accused anyone in all these years
“In my opinion there was no similar effort towards the Serb side. Recently, there were elections in Serbia, and Mr. Vucic is still in power. But Mr. Vucic was a propagandist, a minister of Milosevic's information, during the worst period of genocide”.
I haven't heard anyone accuse him of anything, in any kind of legal process, and I see the situation very asymmetric. The two sides are being treated in different ways. The irony is that the winning side is paying the price and the losing side, Serbia is not being asked to be responsible for the terrible crimes it has committed, for which the people of my mission witnessed”.
