View within the prison where former President Thaci and other former KLA leaders are being held

Seven former political and military leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK) are being held in custody at The Hague. They are accused of a series of acts, of fearing witnesses weighing down on former heads of the War Veterans Organisation to the murders and cruel treatment of people who are accused of former KLA leaders. The Special Court's detention facility is located at the Haagladen prison complex in The Hague. This prison is unique in the Netherlands, and the only one in which there are 24 hours of physical and psychiatric treatment services offered for detainees. Haagladen is located in Scheveningen and can accommodate about 200 people.
Through a video story published on this prison's website, the daily work of several workers inside it has been shown. Prison Psychiatric Centre provides care and treatment for inmates with psychiatric problems, while in the rest of the institution, the Somatic Judiciary Centre is offered medical attention.
My name is Edith. I've been working here for 20 years at the Somatic Care Center. People often have psychological complaints, but basically we can take care of everyone here”, a nurse has expressed himself.
“Dation regarding the work at this facility and as a nurse at the hospital is that you have continued surveillance here and that also gives you a very safe feeling”, she said.
Wilbert, a security officer in this prison, has said that for him the most important thing is to maintain order, calm and safety for staff, detainees and visitors”.
A psychologist of this prison, however, has also shown challenges to his daily work.
My name is Björn, I work here as treatment and psychologist coordinator. Here are people with complex psychiatric problems who were unable to survive in society or who were also detained in mental health clinics. When people enter here, they are often a bit confused, often just in crisis or facing psychiatric crisis. We're actually trying to explain as soon as possible when they're here what's going on with them and then see what treatment they need”, he says.
According to Haagladen Prison's internal rules, visits to those held at the facility are one hour a week.
The detainees and those who visit these health centres within the prison are going through some inflow checks that start through the bometry with finger scan. These health centers offer various therapies for patients, such as exercise, psychotherapy, music therapy, creativity, and so on.
But for the treatment they are making to Special Court security members, they have complained in their first submissions to the two former KLA leaders, former President Hashim Thaci and former spokeswoman KLA, Jakup Krasniqi.
While the chief of the Vetevendosje Movement Parliamentary Group, Rexhep Selimi, in his first appearance before the Special Court, has had no remarks on dealing with him. Unlike his two former fighters, Selimi has said he understands the rules and no remarks in this regard.
“I understand the rules to come up here, so there is not something I can point out as warning”, Selimi said.
Unlike Selimi, former President Hashim Thaci and former Prime Minister Jakup Krasniqi have complained on Monday in their first appearance before the Special Court for poor treatment that they said was being done to the institution that was founded with the votes of Kosovo Assembly deputies.
Krasniqi, who first appeared before the Special by the four former KLA leaders involved in a joint indictment, expressed outrage at the treatment he received. He said he never treated anyone that way himself.
I want to declare today that never in my life, in no single case have I treated people as much as you treated me from the prison building to this building. I stress, never in my life have I treated people this way”, Krasniqi said.
While, David Hooper, lawyer for former President Hashim Thaci, expressed concern over his client's reputation, while he deemed Thaci's transfer with handcuffs to his hands from the detention facility to the courtroom.
“I hope that in time this person's reputation will be restored. It was a shame to see him in handcuffs”, said lawyer Hooper.
On Tuesday, in a response to the Express, the Special Court has argued the behaviour of members of the security of this institution in relation to the two former KLA leaders, saying they follow the highest international standards for dealing with the detainees.
