Spain will buy 20 million doses of vaccines produced by Pfizer and BioNTech and the first shipments of anti-drug CO VID-19 could be taken early next year, Health Minister Salvador Illa said today.
“We are counting that there may be 20 million doses of Pfizer vaccine. Since it takes two doses for one person, we can vaccinate 10 million Spaniards against the Coronobrus,” Illa told Spanish public television TVE.
The Spanish minister said the government in Madrid would sign a contract with the American company Pfizer “this or next week” so that the first doses could reach early 2021.
He said the vaccine would be handed over to the free health system and that then it would be introduced according to “technical criteria” and expert recommendations which will be vaccinated first. He added that it is quite likely that people from the risk group will be vaccinated first, such as medical personnel.
Asked if the vaccine against COVID-19 will be mandatory in Spain, he responded negatively.
I don't believe mandatory vaccine is necessary. People are aware that in the past, many infectious diseases have been overcome by the vaccine,” said Ila.
Spain, a country with a population of 47 million, has recorded 1.3 million cases of coronarys since March, of which 39,350 have died.
Otherwise, on Monday, Pfizer and BionNTech reported that their vaccine was 90 percent effective, but it should receive permission for use by the regulator.
