Juan Carlos Seres was sentenced to 505 years in prison for money laundering until July 8, 2419.
He was one of four defendants convicted in 1991 to 505 years in prison for cleaning up more than $300m of a cocaine cartel.
All four defendants appealed the verdict to the District Appeals Court, which is still pending.
However, Seresi's lawyers recently demanded that their client be relieved of compassion for his age and health. They claimed that Seres has high blood pressure and is sensitive to the most serious forms of covid-19.
A court in Los Angeles ruled that Seres would be released immediately and that he would be under the supervision of competent authorities three years after release from prison.
The judge said that Seres was convicted of a nonviolent crime, that he had already served 30 years in prison and had shown exemplary conduct and ordered his release, taking into account his age and health.
