Russian President Vladimir Putin says there is no hidden motive after his decision not to congratulate US President-elect Joe Biden for his victory in the November 3rd election, insisting that the Kremlin is awaiting “the end of the internal political stalemate”.
Putin made these comments during an interview for state television on November 22nd. The Kremlin has been asked why Putin has not wished him for victory, as many European and world leaders have done.
In past American elections, Putin was among the first leaders to congratulate Donald Trump for victory, issuing a statement less than 12 hours after Trump's counterCandid, Hillary Clinton, admitted defeat on November 9, 2016.
Biden has been unofficially declared election winner based on the number of popular votes he has won and the election vote.
The Electoral College will convene on 14 December and formally announce the election winner, as defined in the American Constitution. The inauguration of the new US president is expected to be held on January 21st.
During the interview, Putin suggested it is inappropriate to congratulate Beden on his victory.
I want to assure you: there is no secret motive: that we like or don't like someone. We are just waiting for the end of the internal political stalemate”, the Russian president was quoted as saying.
Putin speaking of the decision not to congratulate Beden, has said it will not change relations between the US and Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also said the American election system has shortcomings, saying Washington has no right to judge other states that have problems during the election processes.
Election observers from the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe, which have monitored US elections, have said the elections have been “ndaluaring and well-managed”.
But, observers have criticised what they called <x0 charges groundless for systemic shortcomings, especially the current president, including during election night, which undermines public confidence in democratic institutions”.
