The number of refugees who have crossed the border has already exceeded the figure for which the agency is prepared with 11,000 people, UN officials say.
“Basca with all agencies, we've built a plan for about 20 thousand people and we're already in the figure of 31 thousand, so this is the exceeded figure,” Axel Bisschop said. “The planned new figures are about 200,000. ”
Fighting in the Tigary region has also left more than 2 million children in urgent need of assistance, with thousands of others at risk in refugee camps in Sudan, Unicefi said.
The agency is particularly concerned about the possibility of spreading the disease among refugees, with half of them children.
