In contrast, a total of 1,562 smaller quakes -- 44 with power above the 4th degree of Richter -- have been recorded since Friday, when the 6.6-degree earthquake in Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey with 4.3 million people.
Turkey lies in a region of high seismic activity and has suffered much from earthquakes in the past, writes Anadolu, the newspaper Express broadcast.
In 1999, a 7.6 - degree earthquake had occurred in the Marmara Sea, and quakes had caused major consequences and damage on the mainland, leaving some 17,000 people dead.
