China urges G20 to give development priority and secure debt relief for poor countries
China's President Xi Jinping called for more efforts to build a world of common prosperity and zero poverty, as G20 leaders are stepping up efforts to help poor and heavily indebted countries.
“We need more than ever for substantial measures in the face of the Riyadi G20 summit.
President Xi underlined that development is the key to the extinction of poverty. G20 members must give priority to development agendas in world macropolitical co-ordination and implementation of the Agency for Consistent Development 2030.
The G20 countries must reduce the debt burden of developing countries and continue to provide them with the necessary financial support in order to increase their ability to reduce poverty, said President Xi.
At this summit, President Xi said China supports the G20 decision to extend the Debt Service Association and will continue to implement it together with other parties.
Xi added that China has fully implemented this Initiative, with a total exceeding $1.3 billion.
China is towards eventual achievement of the extinction of absolute poverty, Xi said at the summit. This achievement was accomplished 10 years before the deadline set by the United Nations Agency for sustainable Development 2030.
While in another event under the G20 leaders' summit for protecting the planet, President Xi pledged that China would make more efforts to address climate and other environmental challenges and protect the planet.
Xi added that China will fully implement the Paris Agreement and work to realise its goal of neutralising carbon dioxide emissions before 2060. China supports low carbon energy shift in the post-COVID era to achieve the goal of sustainable energy for all, he added.
