On Tuesday, Vienna police said the SWAT teams entered the apartment of the armed person using explosives and were becoming a search in its suburbs.
Vienna remains on high alert after the incident, as police step up its investigation into the attack and call for other possible suspects. At least three people, including two men and one woman, were killed in the shooting.
Another 15 have been wounded, including a police officer, and are being treated in hospitals, Vienna police said. In addition to the three victims, an armed person was shot dead by police.
During a press conference early Tuesday, Austrian Interior Minister Carl Nehammer said the person he had shot had worn a false explosive belt at the time of the attack and was “radiated”.
The radicalized “Person is someone who is a fan of IS”, Nehammer said, referring to the terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
Yesterday's “Sulm was an attack on our values and a completely useless attempt to weaken our democratic society or divide it,” said Nehammer.
“We don't tolerate this by any means and by no means”.
Police have also received more than 20,000 videos from the public after the attack, and a 35-member investigation team had so far examined 20% of them for evidence.
