Pristina Mayor Shpend Ahmeti, through a Facebook status, has clarified his position in the face of new measures imposed by the Government of Kosovo for defence by Covid-19. He has said he is not against these measures, but against criteria, which according to him are isolating Pristina with wrong calculations.
This is his full status:
Because all of you are writing to me, I need to clarify:
1. I'm not against the masses. We all understand that the situation has deteriorated not only in us but in the entire region of the world.
2. I am against the stupid criteria that single Pristina with wrong calculations. So these measures make the situation difficult and do not help the COVID situation. If the measures are taken in all of Kosovo with reasons based on slowing down the virus.
3. I don't care about the welfare of business owners in terms of financial security because I think they're at the bottom. But businesses are a source of employment and I have the plight of the worker who appears in the municipality looking for food and medicine.
4. Measures must be well targeted and effective. Otherwise I won't achieve its goal again after increasing the number will be a double cost.
5. The closure, without economic measures of subsidisation and investment of money in the economy, causes great health costs. In addition to a very serious psychological situation for citizens of the computer, we are also adding inexorable economic and social problems.
5. Before I close the others, I'm gonna have to track our yard. How many workers in public institutions and even in the Pristina municipality adhere to the rules, because it is clear that this too is the case of spread. We all have a great responsibility here.
In the end, I said several times that with these criteria Pristina is being penalised because it tests more. This is unfair and bad motivation for not testing me. We have to make the opposite test as much as possible. Like. How can Pristina have mortality around 1 per cent of Prizren 4 per cent, when the number is much larger in Pristina. That only makes sense when we realize Pristina tests more.
So yes, the situation is severe and necessary measures.
The criteria must be scientific, not ad-hoc!
The measures must have goals and restrictions based on strong arguments.
We need to test more and we need to increase health capacities in case of an even bigger crisis. We have to make sure that there's enough oxygen for all regional hospitals and we have to have control plans for mobile hospitals. Shh. Pristina has this plan!
If we're closed now, what happens when we open it all up, or the idea is to shut it down, or something.
What I'm saying is I'm not even saying about gastronomics, economic opas, or business owners, because their profit is my least concern. But losing them means job losses, and then social assistance for citizens. We do so as a measure, but this decision is not taken as if we were talking about another country. We go home tonight because we have a safe income in the public sector, but full of us tonight don't fall asleep.
