Turkey's former prime minister, Mesut Yilmaz, died in Istanbul on Friday, his family announced.
Yilmaz, 73, died in the hospital, where he was treated for lung cancer.
Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan's office named Yilmaz as “one of Turkey's most prominent political-life figures.
Yilmaz was foreign minister during the 1980s and three times prime minister during the 1990s.
Yilmaz's mandates have covered unstable coalitions, political scandals and a growing conflict with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PPK).
His latest mandate in 1997-99 has gone through a major rift with neighbouring Syria.
In 1998, Yilmaz has caused anger throughout the Arab world, after threatening to see “ia points out” to then Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, due to support for The PC.
Yilmaz has led the Anap (The Motherland) party before suffering major losses in the 2002 elections, when Erdogan's Justice and Development Party has entered power. / REL
