Thailand's parliament was left without its first transgjitary MP Wednesday after the constitutional court revoted its country in what critics called a political movement against supporters of the pro-democracy movement of the kingdom.
Tanwarin Sukhapisis, a former film actor and maker, was a pioneer for the LGBT community when he won a seat in last year's elections for the Future Party.
But the party was disbanded in February this year, a move that escalated discontent and encouraged pro-democracy activists to urge the government to withdraw.
Tens of its deputies, including Tanwarin, joined another party -- the Party of Movement Before -- but a judge ruled today that, as a <x0); director of a media company”, she had violated the election law and had to leave her parliamentary seat.
I wasn't surprised I expected this to happen. I will continue my work fighting for better results for the LGBT community,” said Tanwarin for AFP, adding that she did not think the decision had to do with her gender identity.
Tanwarin is the last victim of a law that many claim the government is using as a political weapon.
Otherwise, Thailand's Parliament has three other transgiar deputies.
