According to statistics published by the European Asian Office (EASO), in July asylum requirements for the first time and re-applications by Albanians were 505 in total. In comparison to June, asylum demands have increased by 28%.
With the pandemic's isolation, asylum demands dropped significantly, dropping to only 90 in May. For the 7th month, applications dropped by 72%, in proportion to the same period a year ago. But, in July Albania, although it is 14th for asylum applications, was ranked second, in relation to the population, according to EASO data and the respective population of major asylum countries processed by Monitor.
It should be said that Syria is the first in the world, with 35 applications for asylum for 100,000 people. Albania comes in second, although there are fewer applicants in number than Afghanistan, Venezuela, Colombia, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey and so on, because it has a much lower population. In July, there were nearly 18 applications from Albania for 100,000 inhabitants.
Third place is Georgia (14.4), then Venezuela (13.3) and the fifth is Kosovo, with 10.2 applications for 100,000 inhabitants in July.
Albanians are insistent on leaving, while according to the EASO, they have a high number of reapplications.
Young People Flee
Previous data released by Eurostat showed that most asylum applications from Albania were being made by young people. Between January 2019 and August 2020, they have applied for asylum in one of the European Union states, and others about 30.5 thousand Albanians, according to data published by Eurostat and processed by Monitor.
Most of those leaving are young. Eurostat data suggests that 23.8 thousand people, or 78% of total applications for this period were up to 34 years.
Very high is the minority flight. In January 2019-August 2020, there have been 6,895 asylum applications by minors less than 17, which account for about 29% of applications under 34, or 23% of total.
