The United States Special Forces have saved an American citizen who has been held hostage in Nigeria for a week, the Pentagon said.

The American citizen was kidnapped by an armed man in Niger on October 27th and sent to Nigeria, where American forces released him, the Pentagon said through a media report.

Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said the American citizen is safe and under the care of the US State Department.

No member of the American Army has been hurt during this operation, Hoffman said. He also said the US praises the support of the international partners it has provided, for this rescue operation to be realised.

The great winner of our elite special forces. Details will be provided later”, wrote American President Donald Trump on the social Twitter network.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement saying the US is committed to bringing all its hostage citizens home.

“We made this dedication late last night in Nigeria, where some of our best fighters saved an American citizen”, he said.

The American citizen who was saved, according to the media, is Pholip Walton, 27, who lives with his wife and family. in Massalata, a village in southern Nigeria.

Niger is located in the Sahel region, where the uprisings of groups related to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State militants have claimed the lives of thousands.

Tens of Western citizens are currently being held hostage in this region.
