Serbian analysts show what awaits Serbia if Joe Biden wins

A large part of Serbs mostly remember the democratic candidate for president Joe Biden for his rhetoric, which, apparently, often was not very favourable for Serbs, writes B92. In a chapter of his rich political career in the 1990s, Biden, as a prominent Democrat, insisted [...]
In a chapter of his rich political career in the 1990s, Biden, as a prominent Democrat, insisted that the American administration be militarily engaged in the Balkans.
He was a sharp critic of the then regime of Yugoslavia, led by Slobodan Milosevic, and many rank him among the most meritors of NATO bombings in 1999.
“We cannot only talk unilaterally about the Anti-Serbian rhetoric of Biden, and not talk about Slobodan Milosevic's policy, which was actually discussed, and not about Serbs”, political analyst Dusan Janzic explains about Serbian media.
As he says, anyone who has followed the development of Biden and US policy towards Yugoslavia should see the change in both rhetoric and a more serious overhaul of the new fact and this is Serbia.
When Biden comes to the political scene, there is no Serbia, there is Yugoslavia in the breakup. It was supported by Republican and democratic America. It happened that in the 1990s they misjudged the development of nationalism in Serbia and lost the battle with Europe. “Then Germany, mainly Austria, countries that accelerated Croatia and Slovenia's recognition and survived the process America wanted to implement through Ante Markovic the process of reform and NATO membership,” explains Janjic.
He recalls the statements of Janjic and Beden from five or six years ago, in which he said the United States was essentially obliged to approach all history from the position of war.
And there are no details in the war. Serbia is on the other side and there is no dispute. He defended that policy,” says Janjic, adding that he often neglected that Biden at a moment in Congress asked him for NATO's coming to Drina and cutting off the conflicts of war, though, as he estimates, this was not realistic.
Janjic does not think he will change anything in Washington's agreement if Biden comes to power.
Nothing, I'm not even sure that Biden will be softer than Trump and Trump is tough. Washington's agreement introduces Serbia into some new relations with Israel, NATO and America. In fact, it goes to what the American administration has always wanted because there are partners in Serbia and Serbs in the Balkans”, Janjic said.
He believes that Biden would work with the EU and NATO in the Balkans.
“If Serbia wants to join the EU, then there will be no problems. If he wants to join NATO, which he does not want now, he will have to think,” he says.
With Biden, we can hope for another methodology more public talk, agreement and dialogue, and fewer decisions overnight, Janjic concludes.
Dr. Neven Cvetićan, president of the Institute of Social Sciences' Forum for Strategic Studies, also believes that if Biden becomes president, Serbia can expect greater synchronization between the US and the EU.
As he says, the Biden agreement reached in Washington between Serbia and the current administration of Donald Trump “may not be delayed in the rough, but will improve it with other elements, including the European Union in it.
“As a pragmatic, realistic politician, he has a good assessment of how far one can somehow go by trying to find a solution and make it in a deliberate way so that he does not create an anti-effective,” told Serbian media.
He adds that Beden, as a pragmatist, will probably be aware that it is impossible to return to the Balkans the policy that was during Obama, Bush Jr, Clinton ... but that he will probably try to adjust Trump's policy with his Democratic Party views and needs. That part of America.
The most important thing is yet to come, says Cvetićan, because, as he points out, we have to see what the division of tasks will be if Biden wins the presidential mandate at the White House.
“As president, Beden will not only deal with the Balkans, with which he was taken as deputy chairman, where this was his area for which he was specifically in charge. If he becomes president, he will deal with all of US politics, so we must wait to see who will be in the cabinet's office especially for the Balkans, as Grenelle is now in front of the Trump cabinet. We need to see concrete names. “So far, some of its specific attitudes, which are the tradition of the Democratic Party of America, have been achieved to co-ordinate more with Europe, Brussels, etc.”, concludes Cveit skies.
