Greece and Turkey have agreed to avoid accidental clashes in the eastern Mediterranean by establishing a line of direct military communication, the Atlantic Alliance, NATO, announced.
Chief NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, welcomed this development, which comes after weeks of talks between military officials from the alliance's two member states.
Ankara and Athens have agreed to hold talks after weeks of disagreements over gas exploration in the region, reports Ora News.
The situation led to a dramatic rise in tensions, causing fear that conflict could erupt, perhaps by chance.
“After a series of technical meetings between the military representatives of Greece and Turkey at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, came to the establishment of a bilateral military mechanism”, NATO said through a statement.
Stoltenberg thanked both sides for their constructive “anging”.
The announcement came as European Union leaders began talks within a summit on their relations with Turkey.
Turkey has expressed a desire to join the EU over the past five decades, but analysts say the growing number of disputes between Erdogan and the bloc's leaders has dimmed those prospects.
