The European Commission has launched procedures from Hungary on violations of European Union laws regarding asylum.
The EU has sent official notice to Hungary on October 30th, warning Budapest that the new asylum procedures, in response to the coronary pandemic, constitute the incorrect implementation of EU legislation in terms of asylum”.
The new procedures require that citizens of non-EU countries initially apply for asylum at the Hungarian Embassy outside the EU and be offered a special permit for entry.
The “Commission considers this rule to be the illegal restriction for asylum procedure”, as according to the EU, “excludes persons who are outside Hungary's territory, including at the border, from the application for international protection”.
Hungary has two months to respond to the European Commission.
The European Union has consistently criticised Hungary in terms of rule of law and migration.
Since the migrants' crisis in 2015, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has repeatedly clashed with official Brussels for migration policies.
In May, the EU Court of Justice ruled against Hungary in a case for asylum seekers who were detained in a camp in a Transit area, bordering Serbia.
Hungary has closed these camps following this court's decision, but continues to pressure to close borders after the 27-member bloc introduced the latest plan for asylum seekers.
