The European Union's foreign ministers will gather today, on 12 October to discuss a range of issues, including Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, possible sanctions against Russia for its alleged role in poisoning opposition politician Alexei Navajo and the situation in Belarus.
EU Special Envoy for Dialogue Between Kosovo and Serbia Miroslav Lajcak will report to the ministers of member states on the flow of dialogue and problems he has faced so far.
While, in connection with the poisoning of Navajo, France and Germany last week submitted proposals to impose sanctions on Russian individuals, responsible for its poisoning and a unit involved in the programme producing a nervous agent from the Novicok group.
The sanctions proposal came after the Organisation for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), on 6 October, confirmed the findings of specialised labs in Germany, France and Sweden that Navlany had been poisoned with nervous agent from the Novicok group.
Germany and France accused Russia of failing to investigate the full circumstances of the Navajo poisoning.
“in this context, we consider there is no other reasonable explanation for the poisoning of Navajo, except for a Russian involvement and responsibility”, said German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and his counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian, in a joint statement on 7 October.
It is unclear whether EU foreign ministers will agree on sanctions at this meeting or postpone the decision for a later date.
Navalny is ill on a visit from Siberia to Moscow on August 20th and has spent nearly three weeks in a coma.
Two days later, he moved to the Charite Hospital in Berlin, where doctors found traces of the Novico nervous agent in his body, writes relief.
EU foreign ministers will also discuss the bloc's response to developments in Belarus, including possible sanctions on Alyksandra Lucas and other individuals.
Earlier in October, the EU sanctioned 40 Belarusan officials for their role in a brutal crackdown on protesters and opposition, as well as fraud during the August 9th elections.
Lucashenka is not on the list of sanctions, but EU diplomats have said it could be added later.
