In this postponement that damaged EU credibility, Cyprus insisted that its EU partners had taken a hard stand against Turkey for its energy exploration in the disputed waters of the eastern Middle East before agreeing on sanctions against Belarus.
After several hours of overnight talks, leaders agreed to a declaration of support for Cyprus and Greece, and issued a sharp warning to Turkey that there could be punitive measures if it continues to work on those waters.
The text, where the EU “vigorously condemned the violation of the independence of the Republic of Cyprus”, enabled Cyprus not to use veto in Belarus, writes The Guardian, past Periscope.
However, the final list of officials who will be subject to EU travel stops includes 40 names, but not even Alexander Lucas.
Officials said the authoritarian leader could be added to the list in the coming weeks, if he refuses to enter talks with the opposition. /Periscope
