The 27 leaders of the European Union meet today in Brussels to find ways of de-scaling tensions between Turkey and members of the bloc Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration on gas research activities in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Turkey has often called on the EU to adopt a fair position on the dispute and give up Greece's favour with the EU's solidarity excuse.
Ahead of the summit, President Erdogan sent a letter to the bloc's leaders, repeating Ankara's call for dialogue with Greece amid tensions in the region.
EU leaders will also try to break a deadlock on Belarus by resolving a stalemate with Turkey that has exposed paralysis in the bloc's decision-making.
In a statement, European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen called for de- escalation in the Eastern Mediterranean, but also warned that the EU has prepared means to respond to a possible new crisis.
There are two possibilities, or tensions are increasing, which is something we don't want or have de-progression and we're going towards a constructive relationship, that's what we want,” she said.
