Friday's attack at Bagadid Airport, authorised by US President Donald Trump, has added to tensions between the United States and Iran, which have also had disagreements before.
Iraqi citizens gathered on Baghdad streets Saturday morning before the funeral departure. They carried flags of Iraq and Shiite militia.
Qasem Solejmani was commander of the Kurdish forces and was responsible for Iranian Army operations in the Middle East.
He was killed while traveling in a car near Baghdad airport. Iran supports several militant Shiite groups in Iraq and has been repeatedly accused by the United States of financing terrorism.
US President Donald Trump said his country's forces killed the Iranian commander to prevent a war, rather than start a new one, writes “Reuters”.
