Skopje-Blace Highway Agreement Signed

The government of Northern Macedonia has signed the agreement with a construction firm for the start of operations for the first two kilometers of the Skopje-Blace highway, which will connect northern Macedonia with Kosovo through the “Arbabe Xhaferi” highway. Works are expected to begin in the spring, while by then the process of expropriation [...] is expected to be completed.
The works are expected to begin in the spring, while by then the process of expropriating 68 land parcels, owned by Blace residents, is expected to be completed.
The highway will be 12km long, at a cost of 120m euros.
The twokm will be financed by the state budget of Northern Macedonia, while other World Bank loan parts and the Western Balkan fund.
The total length of the highway will be 12.5km and is expected to be used in 2021.
“Project of a particular strategic importance for the country and the entire region. I believe that very soon Pristina and Skopje will be tied to a modern highway, which will be passed in less than 45 minutes. These two capitals will become the closest in the region, providing an opportunity for connection of people, goods and a new climate of co-operation between states and peoples”, North Macedonia Deputy Prime Minister Bujar Osmani, the project co-ordinator, has declared.
Construction of this highway has been promised since 16 years ago, but due to the lack of political readiness -- primarily from the Macedonian side -- it has stalled, which has often led to clashes among political parties.
