The Polish Senate today rejected a controversial bill, destined to punish judges who question judicial reforms promised by the ruling conservatives and criticised by the European Commission and the European Court of Justice.
The high room, where the opposition is easily in the majority, rejected this bill, the so-called mouth closure law by critics, with 51 votes to and 48 against”, stressed the president of the High Chamber, Tomasz Grodzki.
The conservative government of the Law and Justice Party ( The PiS) advocates the reforms it predicts, according to it, to fight corruption and the consequences of communism.
The opposition sees this bill as an attempt to silence critical magistrates and reduce independence in justice.
