Today, the second Economic Forum is under way in Tirana, where Prime Minister Edi Rama had the opening word, who said this meeting is a platform of dialogue to move faster in the function of empowering the national and family economy, through sound co-operation between the public and private sectors.
“100 years ago on January 30th, 1920, we had the Lucnje Congress that is a very important event in building our state, a state that always looks west at its development. I hope this year will be good both for us and for the EU, for the region and for our relations with all neighbours, and I believe that this can serve as a foundation for the development of the economy, as well as for our citizens”, Rama said.
Speaking of achievements in numbers, the head of the Albanian government focused mostly on lower unemployment and foreign investment in the country.
And since I know that when it comes to the economy that people don't eat and drink the figures, and they want to know where tomorrow is, I have a lot of numbers here, but I'm summing up. We have the lowest rate in 25 years, according to the World Bank, and I know that right away those who have been following us will say it happened because people have gone away, but it doesn't come from this. Another figure, foreign investment, we have progress in investment”, he said.
Speaking of what needs to be improved, Rama told the business sector.
“Let me talk about challenges, we need to improve the business climate, behavior of administration, we need to especially improve that part related to business. During this year we will have substantial results in this direction”, Rama said.
At the end of his speech, however, Rama also spoke of organised crime as one of the biggest problems.
We know that one of the most problematic factors is organized crime and extortion, we'll talk about a crime deal, asking each person convicted so far to prove that the assets that are derived from legitimate businesses will be taken away. So it's a message both legal and illegal. We're going to tell illegal businesses that this is not their country and that they have to go through a lot of difficulties, that it's time to go after them seriously and make sure that all these negative things they've done with organized crime by entering the administration and politics, that time has ended. Fifth, regional co-operation. I would like to hold a further discussion to focus Tirana's economic forum on improving our economy in the region”, he said.
