Some people disappeared while sixteen people were sent to the hospital for injuries.
Chinese media said the search and rescue operation is still continuing, while investigations have begun due to the accident.
The incident occurred Monday afternoon in Xining, capital of Qinghai province. Large pits on the street are not unusual in China and are often blamed for lack of construction quality.
In 2013, five people had died after the opening of a ten - foot - wide [10 m] hole at the gates of an industrial center in Shenzhen, writes the Guardian”.
