Gary McLaren, 50, died while celebrating with his fiancée and friends at the holiday resort in Pattaya, eastern Thailand.
McLaren tried to light a 50cm cardboard tube filled with fireworks, the Kosovo Press broadcasts.
The Witnesses said that his initial attempts to light fireworks failed, but he arrived at a second attempt, causing smoke to be poured out of the tube. Fireworks then exploded in his face, leaving him dead.
McLaren studied at Tresham College, near Kettering, before moving to Thailand. Police captain Nachhonrat Nontseelard said the British Embassy in Bangkok has been informed of McLaren's death, who has been taken to hospital for posthumous orientation.
