United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres is deeply concerned by the rising tensions in the Middle East, where the United States killed the senior Iranian commander, Qasem Solejman, following violent protests in front of the US Embassy in Baghdad.

“This is a moment in which leaders must exercise maximum content. The world cannot afford another war in the region”, his spokesman Farhan Haq said in a statement.

General Qasem Solejmani, head of Iran's Revolutionary Guard elite forces, has been killed by American forces in Iraq.

The Pentagon has confirmed that he was killed by “presidential decision”.

General Solejmani was in the car as he headed to Baghdad Airport, along with his Iranian-backed militia, when he was shot through an air strike in the United States.

General Soleiman, 62, is considered the second most powerful figure in Iran, after the Supreme Leader, Ayatolah Ali Khamenei. His elite forces, Quids, have reported directly to the Supreme Khamene leader and he has been named a national historical figure.

However, the United States has singled out its commander and forces as terrorists and held them responsible for the deaths of hundreds who have been part of American staff.

The US Embassy in Baghdad has asked all its citizens to leave Iraq immediately after the air strikes.

The general, Qasssem Solejmani, has killed or injured thousands of Americans for a long time and has been plotting for many, but it has been caught! He was directly or indirectly responsible for killing millions of people, including a large number of protesters killed in Iran”, said through a Twitter post, American President Donald Trump. /rel
