Officials said they discovered a tunnel and found cells filled with about 200 bags of land. They also claimed that the prison director and security chief were fired immediately, the AP reports.
It's impossible that no one saw all of this. It is not a one-day preparation or one night,” said Justice Minister Cecilia Peres.
Interior Minister Euclides Acevedo said the tunnel could be a mask to cover the co-operation of prison officers and that many prisoners allegedly are allowed to exit the main prison gate.
He added that most fugitives belong to the first major “Commander from Brazil, near the border of Pedro Juan Cabalero.
Acevedo also said national police have mobilised for this escape and the search for fugitives is continuing.
