Gjergj Kastriot, Albania's national hero, was born in 1403. It belonged to the Kastriot royal family. His father was John Kastriot, the leader of the larger cities of the day, Kruja and Mirday, and his mother was Vojsawa.
When George was born, his father, John Kastriot, was ruler of an important state, which stretched at least from the outskirts of Prizren and Tetovo in the east to the Adriatic Sea in the west.
Gjergj Kastriot Skenderbeu died at 63. It is viewed by many Western European countries as the hero who prevented the Ottoman Empire from conquering the West of Europe.
Gjergj Kastriot Skenderbeu remains the legendary figure of the Albanian nation in centuries. Skenderbeu's death meant the end of Albania's independence, which only caused it to appear as a united and independent state.
