A first shipment of 10 million smuggled cigarettes was reportedly discovered at a warehouse in Stabroek, in the port area. Following the smuggling chain, customs officers encountered three suspicious containers, containing a total of about 30 million cigarettes.
Other warehouses were then searched in Brecht, between Antep and the Dutch border, leading to the seizure yesterday of about 86 million units.
As with drug trafficking, especially cocaine, smuggling seizures have increased significantly in Belgium in recent years.
