126 million smuggling cigarettes

Belgian customs reported today that it had seized 126 million cigarettes in the port area of Anvers, a traffic that has been attributed to a single sector and represents a possible loss of 65m euros for tax administration. A first shipment of 10 million smuggled cigarettes was reportedly discovered at a warehouse in Stabroek, in the port area. Following the smuggling chain, customs officers encountered three suspicious containers, containing a total of about 30 million cigarettes.
Other warehouses were then searched in Brecht, between Antep and the Dutch border, leading to the seizure yesterday of about 86 million units.
As with drug trafficking, especially cocaine, smuggling seizures have increased significantly in Belgium in recent years.
