Migrants are again flocking to Europe.
The European Union's Office for Asylum (EASO) announced that during July alone, the number of persons seeking international protection in European countries increased 26%. During this month, as this office explained, nearly 63,000 people have claimed the asylum.
Although much lower than the levels registered in 2015 and 2016, when over 1 million immigrants entered Europe, most removed from the conflict in Syria and Iraq, the actual figures represent a significant increase compared to the same period last year.
The flight of several years ago has caused one of the biggest EU crises as member states clashed over responsibility for immigrants. Recent signals are disturbing, especially if added and Turkey's warnings that it will reopen the Syrian refugees' route to Europe unless it receives more international support for creating a safe area in northern Syria. Syrians, Afghans and Venezuelans made up about a quarter of applicants in July. Many others came from Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, Colombia, Iran and Albania.
