Even in these elections, the number of women running for MP position is twice as small as that of men. Until equal gender representation in all legislative organs is presented in the Law for Gender Equality, this is not happening in Kosovo.
Only 343 women are on the political parties' lists for MP's position in the 6 October elections, while the number of men is 724 -- twice as large.
While political subject officials have pledged to give space to women in high positions in the country, this has not been seen in this election either, even though the equal approach of men and women in decision making is deemed a necessary precondition for a democratic government.
Recently, there has been also criticism against the Central Election Commission, which has been charged with violating the right to equal treatment of women in their rights, writes today “Zer”.
The Kosovo Institute for Justice during yesterday has reacted to this Commission, which is continuing to violate constitutional and legal guarantees regarding gender equality, mainly in equal treatment of women in electoral rights and participation.
“Both the CEC and political parties have ignored IKD calls for implementation of the legal obligation, for gender representation to be promoted in the 50% quota, as defined in the Law on Gender Equality.
On Friday, the ombudsman about concerns raised by the IKD since the national elections in 2017 has announced he has filed at the Constitutional Court in Pristina, responsible for the General Department, the indictment with a request for provisional measure in terms of the CEC's violation of equal treatment of women in electoral rights and participation”, is said by the IKD.
