Senior American officials told CBS News that the countries were south of Iran at the northern end of the Gulf.
Saudi air defences did not stop drones and rockets because they were heading south to prevent attacks by Yemen, officials added.
Iran denies involvement in these attacks, which destroyed global oil supplies.
