Four people, including a soldier, were killed and several others were injured when Indonesian security forces opened fire on students after a protest over racism at a university in Jayapura on Monday.

In another incident in the town of Wamena, at least 16 civilians were killed and 65 were injured during a uprising, which protesters said was prompted by a teacher who had called <x0mun <x0mun” a high school student.

Hundreds of students were gathered at the University of Cnderawasih, but were ordered by authorities to disperse. The Witnesses said that the students were on their way home and had just left the buses when the fight with the police erupted.

The police started running toward the students and I saw them shooting at them. Police were shooting at the air and towards students. They also used tear gas”, said Martini, a random witness.

Protests by the Western Papuans against racism are seen as part of their quest to declare independence from Indonesia, writes the Guardian”.
