Of the country's population of 323 million, almost 12 million own at least $1 million. They make up about 3.65 percent of the population. In addition, there are 607 billionaires in the United States.
Forbes magazine has drawn up a list of the richest people for every U.S. country, who together own a net fortune of $875 billion.
Ten of them have achieved profits in finance and investment. Eight have been enriched by fashion and retail sales, while five by the food and drink industry.
But the largest assets have had high technology as a source. The four billionaires on each country's richest human list own $251 billion each, or more than a quarter of the assets on the 50th list combined.
Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the state of Washington, is also the richest man in the world, with a net fortune of about $157 billion.
The richest family in the United States is the Waltons family. Jim and Alice Walton, the children of the founder of the Walmart network, Sam Walton, are the richest people in the states they live in.
More than half of the richest people on the list: 60 percent have made their own property, while 21 percent have inherited it. Nineteen percent have been enriched by expanding an existing business that was left to others.
