“At least 250 firefighters, nine helicopters and two aircraft are engaged today to turn off the flames near the town of Valleseco on the island of Gran Canaria, in the Atlantic Ocean Archipelago”, local authorities reported on Twitter.
Officials stress that the fire has great potential to spread and have ordered evacuations in at least six cities.
The island suffered another devastating fire last week. Fires are common in southern Europe during hot and dry summer months, according to the weather agency AMET. Almost half of Spain's provinces are at high risk of fires.
