24 years after surgery called” Storm” (5 August 1995) verbal tensions between Serbia and Croatia continue to be high.
The latter considers the liberation of the country's occupied areas legitimate, while Serbs see it as a tragedy and act of ethnic cleansing.
It was an operation conducted during the war for Croatia's independence, co-ordinated by the Croatian Army, with military support of Bosnia and Herzegovina's military forces, against the Krajina Serb Army and the Bosniak rebel militias of the West Bosnian Autonom region.
At least 400,000 Serbs were cleared of Croatia.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, in office of the ceremony for this anniversary, invites Croatian authorities to explain how it was possible since 582,000 Serbs registered in the 1981 provision, only 184,000 were declared so in 2011.
Vucic says Croatia's operation “The” storm was a joyful day, while for Serbia it is one of the saddest days of the country's history.
On the other hand, Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic sent a message on the occasion of Victory, Homeland and Veterans' Day, saying the operation” The storm” turned the dream of Croats for freedom and independence into reality, allowing the country to become a full member of the international community.
Croatian Prime Minister Andrei Plenkovic, in a message, said Zagreb proudly celebrates the 24th anniversary of the military operation <x0 moustary”, thanks to which Croatia's constitutional and legal subset was placed in most of its” parts.
In Serbia, commemoration of 24th anniversary of the operation” The” storm and the expulsion of Serbs from Croatia took place at the Krusedol monastery (50 km north of Belgrade). Orthodox Church Patriarch Irinej recalled that” The” storm was a planned crime by the Croatian state and condemned the silence of the Roman Catholic Church.
Along with hundreds of people, President Vucic and Prime Minister Ana Brnabic lit candles to remember this day.
“Serbs left Croatia, but did not disappear permanently”, Vucic said, raising questions about whether Croatia was happier and richer today because of what he did”.
In Croatia, 24th anniversary of operation” The” storm will be celebrated today, and, as in the past years, the main ceremony will take place in Knin, the Belgrade of Serb rebels in Croatia. /Attish/
