The month of July was the most pronounced heat on Earth since records began in 1880, scientists said.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said July was 0.95 degrees warmer than the average of months during the 20th century.
July is generally the warmest month of the calendar, but meteorologists say that this year's temperatures set a new record for the past 140 years. The results were expected, as several European countries including France, Belgium and Germany reported that July overturned previous national temperatures records.
High temperatures have been accompanied by other climate extremes. The warming of the oceans has led to an early melting of ice in the northern seas, the Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska.
Meanwhile, even June of this year had set an amazing heat record compared to the past 140 years.
