An independent OVD monitoring group reported today that 1,001 people were arrested by Vladimir Putin's regime yesterday.
Many of those arrested were later released, but 19 were reportedly arrested overnight.
The OVD states that those arrested were confiscated phones and were not allowed to contact a lawyer.
Russian investigators have filed criminal charges against one person, accusing him of wounding a police officer, Russian news agency TAS S reported.
Authorities said they would allow protests in Moscow next weekend in a country far from the city centre, which the opposition had previously rejected.
Protests come after several candidates were rejected by Moscow's election commission.
