The seven leaders of the most developed and industrialized countries on the globe will meet this weekend at the French resort of Biarrriz. The format, once known as G8, included Russia, but it was excluded from its ranks in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimea and the support Moscow gave the rebels to the east of the country.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said that the reasons for Russia's exclusion “remain valid” and that any return offer would actually be “a sign of weakness”.
US President Donald Trump has indicated he supports Moscow's return to G7, whose meeting the United States will organise next year.
His statement came days before he arrived in southern France to attend this year's group summit.
It's much more convenient to have Russia there. It has to go back to G8, because a lot of things that we talk about have to do exactly with it”, was the American president's comment. /tch
