Huntsman, a member of the Republican Party, left the post of governor of the state of Utah in 2009, when former President Barack Obama named him ambassador to China. A year earlier he was re-elected to a second term as governor.

Jon Huntsman has also served as US ambassador to Singapore in the early 1990s, as well as vice representative for trade during former President George W. Bush.
