More than 20 people have died of alcohol poisoning in Turkey over the past month, according to a Turkish media report, as high alcohol taxes have forced Turks to consume illegally produced brandy.
Aberturk television reported over the weekend that a man in the southern province of Adana died of methanol poisoning, which was the 12th death in Adana last week, Reuters reported.
Deaths occurred after the July drinking tax increased by eight percent.
A litre of Turkish brandy now costs more than 200 lira ($35.29), the KosovoPress broadcasts.
The Chamber of Chemical Engineers (KMO) said there is no higher tax on alcoholic beverages in the world than in Turkey.
Since President Recep Tayip Erdogan came to power, taxes on alcohol have increased significantly, and since 2013, the advertising of alcohol and cigarettes has been banned.
