Researchers at Montana State University reviewed health surveys of US high school students between 1993 and 2017.
As general use of drugs among young people rose in the United States, the number of new users fell by nearly 10% in countries where the use of recreative cannabis was legalised.
About 33 countries have legalized medical cannabis, while 10 states have legalized the correct use.
Using cannabis remains illegal in all states for people under the age of 18.
The lead author of the study, Mark Anderson, told the Associated Press that the study, published in the medical magazine “Jama Paddys”, “should help eliminate certain concerns that the use of cannabis among teenagers will increase”.
