Eric Hood entered the car as the mother and father of the children entered a shop Thursday night. They chased the vehicle and managed to catch it after being stuck in traffic.
Hood attacked the father of the children and left. But the 54-year-old was caught by a large crowd of people who beat him to death, police said.
He was declared dead at Temple University Hospital.
Police are trying to identify the victim's attackers via street cameras, but no arrests have been made so far.
The children in the vehicle were not damaged.
